Does introducing your child to poetry intimidate you? I didn’t incorporate poetry books into our homeschool until recently because it seemed way over my head and I didn’t see myself as the poetry type. It wasn’t until I heard about poetry tea time that I finally decided to give poetry a try. It ended up being a great experience and something the kids and I looked forward to each week. However, for this upcoming school year we are going to mix things up and, instead of reading poetry once a week during poetry tea time, we are going read a little poetry every morning. Along with that, we will be taking a term to focus on memorizing poems and writing our own poetry.

Poetry Curriculum

A Child’s Introduction to Poetry by Michael Driscoll

Since we are taking a full term to dig in and learn about and write poetry, I needed some type of poetry curriculum to follow. This book is great for beginners because it’s informative without being overwhelming. With each chapter you learn about a different type of poem plus read a famous example. This is a great book to use as a spine for teaching poetry to kids.

Poetry Books Your Kids Will Love

Below you will find the 8 poetry books we are really enjoying right now. There is a mix of timeless classics as well as hilarious, thought provoking and interactive poems. My plan is to read a few poems from this collection every day, as well as use them in conjunction with our poetry curriculum book. I’ll also select a few for the kids to memorize, and I might join the kids in memorizing the poems too!

1. It’s Raining Pigs & Noodles by Jack Prelutsky

2. Feel The Beat by Marilyn Singer

3. Fresh Picked Poetry by Michelle Schaub

4. When Green Becomes Tomatoes by Julie Fogliano

5. Sing a Song of Seasons selected by Fiona Waters

6. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

7. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

8. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
