These read aloud chapter books were well received by my 2nd grader, but any elementary age child would enjoy them! If you haven’t ever read aloud chapter books to your kids, I highly encourage you to give it a try. I have put together some of our favorites I read to my 2nd grader this past year, which are a good mix of life lessons, adventure and laughter- a little something for everyone!
Our Favorite Read Aloud Chapter Books

1. The Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgiesh
An adventure story about a boy making a trip across the mountain. Along the way he has a run in with some bears and you read how he handles the situation. This story had my daughter sitting on the edge of her chair. It was a quick read which lead to discussions about what my daughter would have done in that same situation.
2. The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
This is a story about a cricket who accidently finds himself in New York City and the friendships he makes, along with the adventures they have. This book was a little longer, but we didn’t notice because the story was engaging and entertaining. My daughter especially likes a story that involves animals, so this one did not disappoint.
3. Mrs Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald
A funny and unusual story about a woman helping the neighborhood kids get rid of their not so great behaviors. This was fun to read as the mom, and hear what my kids thought about the decisions Mrs. Piggle Wiggle made. We had some good discussions after each chapter and I daydreamed what it would be like to have a Mrs. Piggle Wiggle as a neighbor.
4. The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White
Trumpeter swans were born to make trumpet calls, except for one, who was born with no voice. This is a story of perseverance and not letting your short comings stop you. There was so much to unpack in this book, not only for kids, but adults, too! This is an inspirational story all kids should read.
5. A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond
A story about a quirky and polite bear who is rescued from a train station in England. Even though Paddington is polite and doesn’t want to do wrong, he seems to always stumble into mishap. This was a sweet story that had us laughing about all Paddington’s adventures.
6. Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater
This is a funny story about a man who acquires a penguin. A box arrives at his front door and to his surprise there is a penguin inside. Along with trying to figure out logistical life with penguins, there are many funny adventures that take place. Not only is this story about friendship, but it will have you thinking about all your lifetime goals and dreams.
7. Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
A heartwarming story about a friendship between a stray dog and a lonely little girl. The power of love is evident throughout this book, along with a few good adventures. If you don’t already have a dog, your kids will want one after reading this.
8. The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
A story about a mouse living with his family in a hotel when he meets a boy with a motorcycle. Soon after they meet, the adventures and lessons begin for the boy and the mouse. The theme of this story is about pains and lessons of growing up and what it means to be responsible and selfless.
9. My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
This is a clever and heartwarming story with adventure in every chapter. A young boy learns about a baby dragon on a nearby island that needs to be set free. Even though he is warned of the dangers, he sets out to rescue the dragon anyway. The message throughout this story is bravery and standing up for what is right. It was a fast read, but it had a big impact.
10. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
This story will have you feeling all the feels. Ivan, a gorilla, has spent nearly his entire life in captivity, living in a mall. His friendship with the other animals at the mall and a special little girl who visits him are powerful and emotional. This is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story about hope and friendship that you won’t soon forget.
11. The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
This is a story about Wanda, who is bullied at school because she wears the same dress everyday. You walk with Wanda through social isolation, rejection, discrimination and poverty. You also get a glimpse into the bullies lives from causing destruction to eventual redemption. The power of kindness, regret and standing up for what is right courses through the pages of this story. The ending is beautiful.
12. Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace
This story is about a lonely girl, and to her surprise, another young girl moves in across the street. The two girls, Betsy and Tacy, become fast friends and share many adventures together. Their adventures will remind you of the beauty childhood can hold. I had fun reading this one because I remember reading and loving this series when I was in elementary school.
